ESPOL-Lab

A research centre focussing on the place of politics in contemporary society

ESPOL-Lab, ESPOL’s research unit, brings together a team of committed teaching/research academics dedicated to the in-depth study of political issues in contemporary societies. At the heart of ESPOL-Lab’s scientific project is research into the challenges facing our societies, how to analyse them and how to overcome them.

Analysing the essence of political decision-making

ESPOL-Lab’s research focuses on examining the true scope of political decision-making, its drivers and the extent to which politics remains the cornerstone of societal regulation. At the heart of these questions is the role that politics plays, or should play, in the face of the weakening of liberal democracies and the European Union, the increasing globalisation of economies, the emergence of new forms of violence and the place of environmental and agricultural issues in the Global South.

Redefining the role of the State in a changing world

While the modern state may no longer be the exclusive framework for developing and transforming common regulation, it retains an unrivalled appeal and the capacity to direct and organise the future of societies. ESPOL-Lab recognises the enduring importance of the state and seeks to shed light on the evolving relationship between the political sphere, territory and violence, and potentially redefine its remit.

Three themes: Examining contemporary transformations in politics

To achieve its research objectives, ESPOL-Lab relies on a diverse team of experts in political science, political philosophy, political economy, political sociology, law and history, who are centred around major contemporary issues, such as political violence, international security, globalisation, migration, environmental and development issues, the evolution of political parties and systems, and new forms of governance. This expertise converges on three themes that collectively question the contemporary transformations of politics:

  • Quality of democracy: This theme examines the multifaceted dimensions of democratic governance, exploring the challenges and opportunities that shape the quality of democratic practices and institutions.
  • International reconfigurations: In an increasingly globalised world, this theme analyses the changing dynamics of international relations, power structures and the role of non-state actors on the world stage.
  • Politics of the Anthropocene: Recognising the profound impact of human activities on the planet, this theme explores the political dimensions of environmental challenges, sustainability and the drive towards a just and equitable transition to a low-carbon society.

Europe: A formative basis for ESPOL-Lab’s research

Europe is a formative basis for ESPOL-Lab’s research, permeating all three thematic areas. The team studies the role of European institutions, the dynamics of European integration and the challenges and opportunities facing Europe in a globalised world.

ESPOL-Lab: A commitment to unravelling the complexities of politics

Thanks to its rigorous research and interdisciplinary approach, ESPOL-Lab is committed to shedding light on the complex workings of politics in a globalised world. Its contributions aim to inform public debate, shape policy decisions and foster a deeper understanding of the forces shaping our contemporary political landscape.
